A Cliffside Gem

Perched above the Ria Formosa lagoon, Cacela Velha is one of the Algarve’s most enchanting and picturesque villages, offering a glimpse into a slower, more traditional way of life.

Historic Village

Cacela Velha´s whitewashed houses, cobbled streets and centuries-old church create a timeless setting, while the elevated position provides breathtaking panoramic views across the lagoon, sandbanks, salt flats and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean beyond. Originally a fortified Moorish settlement, Cacela Velha has a rich and fascinating history that stretches back many centuries. The village’s strategic location made it an important defensive point and traces of its past can still be seen in the remains of the old fortress overlooking the coastline. Despite its historical significance, the village remains peaceful and unspoilt, with a charm that sets it apart from the busier resort areas of the Algarve.

Visitors can stroll through the quiet village square, admire traditional Algarve architecture, and enjoy freshly caught seafood at small family-run restaurants with spectacular views. The surrounding natural landscape is equally impressive, forming part of the protected Ria Formosa Natural Park, renowned for its diverse birdlife and unique coastal ecosystems.

Nearby Praia de Cacela Velha is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. Reached by a short walk across the lagoon at low tide or by boat, it offers pristine golden sands, crystal-clear waters and a sense of tranquillity rarely found on modern coastlines.

Combining history, culture, natural beauty and unforgettable scenery, Cacela Velha is a true hidden gem and a must-visit destination in the Eastern Algarve.
